About a decade ago, two friends on a mountain bike ride in Otago started a conversation that would lead to a whole new way of enjoying an outdoor soak. That day, Dan Young and Andrew Horton—both sheet-metal engineers—shared their thoughts on what makes a great hot tub. They discussed the common materials like jets and cedar, considering the pros and cons of the designs they had experienced.
From that conversation, a new idea was born, and the next two years saw Dan and Andrew applying their skills to create something truly unique. The result? Stoked Stainless, a company that specializes in handcrafted stainless steel and cedar hot tubs and plunge spa pools. What started with the pair building one handmade, wood-fired tub at a time has since grown into a full-scale business. Now based in Wānaka, the company employs a team of 16 dedicated craftsmen.
A Decade of Innovation in Hot Tub Design
While the basic design elements have remained true to those first prototypes, Stoked Stainless has significantly expanded its offerings. Today, all tubs are crafted from premium marine-grade stainless steel and cedar, providing durability, extensive insulation, and a timeless aesthetic. Their product line now includes various sizes of hot tubs and plunge pools with wood-fired, electric, and hybrid options available. Recently, they’ve even added an above-ground plunge spa pool range, available in two colors and sizes, designed to comfortably fit 10 to 14 people.
According to Stoked Stainless general manager, Mike Daish, “Our plunge spa pools are designed to last a lifetime and can be heated up to 42 degrees. The materials allow for chemical-free treatments, so you care for yourself and the environment; a winning solution for family and friends.”
