Exploring the New Innovative Kitchens Showroom: A Conversation with Designer Lisa Thesing

To celebrate the recent completion of a brand new Residium Showroom for Innovative Kitchens, we sat down with Kitchen Designer Lisa Thesing to discuss the showroom design and the inspiration behind it. Known for her versatility and award-winning designs, Lisa Thesing has firmly established herself in the kitchen design industry as a talented designer, but also a kitchen design educator. Her expertise shines through in every project she undertakes, showcasing her ability to adapt to diverse design requirements.

There are two clear themes and color schemes used in the showroom. What inspired them?

Lisa: I wanted to explore two different themes that are on-trend and popular with our clients. Auckland has many villas and bungalows that lend themselves to traditional design, and classic styles resonate with clients looking to renovate their homes. Using a butler's sink and classical elements such as scrolled corbels and barn door-style paneling appeals to those seeking a kitchen that transcends trends and fashion.

Metallics are a huge trend, and I wanted to showcase how to use them in a project. I specified rich brown tones matched with black and bronze to create a moody ambiance. I also played with texture within the limited color spectrum, using wood grain, matte finishes, and ribbed doors to create drama.

How did you decide on the layout and placement of key elements like the stove, sink, and refrigerator?

Lisa: The work triangle is a classic for a reason; it works very well and is a practical and efficient use of space. I am a big fan of ‘bookending’ bench space, so I designed the integrated fridge at one end of the cooking area and a matching pantry at the other end. The island features the sink and dishwasher and is the ideal area for prep and cleanup, as well as an entertaining and seating space.

Can you explain the choice of materials for the countertops and cabinets?

Lisa: We chose porcelain for all the benchtops in both areas because we are aware that many people have limited awareness of the product, and we wanted to show an alternative to engineered stone. I personally love the depth of color and depictions of natural stone and the beauty of the veining. Matte finishes are on the rise, and I wanted to show the possibilities of porcelain.

We purposely chose examples of the most popular door finishes available on the market and designed it carefully to include Melteca, Lacquer, Dezignatek, and Acrylic finishes.

What specific features have you integrated to enhance the kitchen’s efficiency and user experience?

Lisa: We have used a variety of Blum products in our displays, and the Space Tower installed in the pantry is highlighted by vertical LED lighting triggered by a motion sensor that lights up the interior.

The integrated fridge and dishwasher create a seamless look, and integrated Hideaway bins next to the prep area facilitate ease of use.

We have wall-mounted the laundry washing machine and dryer at eye level, which revolutionizes laundry chores; no more bending over to access heavy loads. Double integrated laundry baskets from Fit NZ allow for easy sorting of colors and whites, and drawers below provide useful storage for outdoor shoes or gardening supplies.

Our bar area has a bronze mirrored splashback which reflects light and is the perfect foil for the hanging glasses and whiskey decanter. Sliding doors over the open shelves create an option for display or discretional storage.

The custom bronze grill over the glass display cabinets references retro style and adds drama and texture.

The scullery has a combination of open shelving for easy access to storage and closed cupboards and pantries to maintain an orderly and tidy space.

How do you balance creating a visually appealing space with ensuring it remains highly functional for everyday use?

Lisa: "Form following function" is a mantra I live by; it must be efficient and practical, as well as looking gorgeous! There isn’t often a tension between the two; a good designer can achieve a functional space and ensure it looks beautiful, but if there is a need to compromise between the two, I tend to lean towards function first.

What are some of the current kitchen design trends that influenced your choices in this showroom?

Lisa: There is a definite trend towards authentic materials that celebrate natural finishes and tones. Wood grains and stone with organic veins and colors, with matte textures, are supreme over glossy and polished finishes. Warm tones of brown and amber are on the rise, with white and grey losing ground. Colors are inspired by nature; sage green and brown with black for contrast. Metallics are huge! Especially the warm tones of brass, copper, and rose gold.
