Project: Inspired by Japan, Utsukushii Uchi.

Utsukushii Uchi, translating to ‘beautiful home’ in English, is a stunning Japanese-inspired oasis that has garnered architectural acclaim. This masterpiece by Design Builders Bay of Plenty flawlessly merges form and function, creating an environment of refined luxury and is the perfect showcase for Residium Exhibitor Sugi NZ to shine on the exterior. The home recently won a Regional Gold Award in the Bay Of Plenty & Central Plateau 2024 House of the Year Awards.

Exterior Elegance: True Yakisugi Cedar Cladding

One of the standout features of Utsukushii Uchi is its exterior, adorned with true yakisugi cedar cladding by Sugi NZ. True yakisugi can only be made with sugi timber (Japanese cedar) due to its unique qualities that make it ideal for the charring process. No other timber compares in terms of durability, strength, or appearance.

Design Builders Bay of Plenty chose Sugi NZ exterior cladding made from sustainably forested Japanese cedar, ensuring an all-natural product free from chemically treated timber, toxic glue, or laminates. The traditional Japanese technique used on the timber not only enhances the wood's durability but also imparts a distinctive aesthetic that beautifies the facade. Amazingly durable and traditionally maintenance optional, the yakisugi cladding comes in three finishes and is available in modern vertical or horizontal shiplap for both interior and exterior use.

Complemented by a modern, mono-pitched roof and deep eaves with exposed rafters, the home’s exterior exudes a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary design. The garage door, framed to resemble a shoji screen, sets the tone for the Eastern aesthetic that continues throughout the property. Formal landscaping further enhances the serene, Japanese-inspired ambiance.

Interior Serenity and Luxurious Touches

Stepping inside Utsukushii Uchi, the tranquility continues with skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the living spaces with natural light. Finely detailed oak joinery extends from the kitchen to various custom elements, including cupboards, a coffee station, a bar, and a study nook. The polished concrete floors seamlessly transition through corner-opening doors to covered decking and a patio, complete with built-in seating around a fire pit.

Thoughtful Layout and Modern Amenities

The layout of Utsukushii Uchi is meticulously designed for both privacy and social interaction. Two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a powder room are discreetly tucked away behind a shoji slider, while a TV room, main suite, and laundry occupy the opposite side of the living area. The master suite epitomizes modern Japanese luxury, featuring a spa-inspired ensuite with a yakisugi wall and a shoji screen that opens the bathtub to the bedroom and the garden beyond.

Utsukushii Uchi is more than just a home; it’s an experience of architectural excellence and serene living. Visit this award-winning masterpiece at 13 Fairwayview Drive, Omokoroa. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 pm to 4 pm or by appointment.
